Bull Ring the changes...Christmas 1963 in Brum

Just time for one last vintage Christmas film, this one was recorded waaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1963 in our old home town. Sadly all the shops featured have long since vanished but we do remember quite a few of them and the old Bull Ring itself which bit the dust at the end of the 20th century. A large part of the film shows a traditional Brummie Christmas too, simpler times and not a single mobile phone, X-box or 98inch flat screen TV in sight!

Christmas Under Fire

We may be in a bit of a pickle (hmmm...with a nice bit of cold turkey and ham) this Christmas what with all the Brexit shenanigans going on (in out in out shake it all about) but imagine what Christmas was like during the darkest days of WW2. We love the vintage fashions and community spirit in this poignant little film but the scenes on the streets of London and in the underground really bring home the realities of life during the war.

Wool-worth a watch!

How old does this ad seem eh? We wonder if any of the items being advertised are 'Wool-worth' MORE now than they cost back then?!

'Phal' out maaaaaan!

Okay, so not many of us can afford a Van Gogh but there's certainly a touch of old Vincent about this vintage gem from 1968.

Painted by Jacques Phal it's guaranteed to brighten up any vintage pad!

Old's Cool Roller Skater!

Gene Kelly.....what a genius!

He could sing, he could dance, he could act, he could definitely roller skate!

Taken from the movie 'It's Always Fair Weather' by MGM, 1955.

Knit for Victory!

One thing we love picking up on our travels is vintage knitting patterns, especially the ones from the 1940s.  They're always so evocative of the time.

These are definitely amongst our favourite designs.

The pose on each one is just perfect!

We only wish we know how to knit!

The Crombie Coat

When the weather turns cold like it did this morning every discerning gentleman should still take care with his appearance.

Cary Grant knew how to do it properly and looked very stylish in his Crombie coat.  Crombie have been producing menswear for over 200 years now and they still remain timeless classics.

Every good gentleman should own one!

What a shoe-perb haul!

It's been a busy few weeks here at Old's Cool Traders. We've been out and about snapping up some lovely vintage clothes and costume jewellery for discerning ladies and gents and here's a particularly glamorous pair of leather shoes that we think date back to the 80s. We know, it barely seems like 5 minutes ago eh?

Cravat's the way to do it...

Sadly you don't see too many cravat wearers these days but we love them! If you've ever wondered how to tie one here's a handy little guide. Splendid stuff!

Old's cool dancers

Isn't this the greatest dance routine ever?! How on earth did they do those splits down the stairs without rupturing something. Incredible.

We would like to say a big thank you to Chris of Magpie Antiques for setting up the fairs, for the traders who continue to support the Dawlish Antiques & Vintage Fair and to all the fairs' customers.  We couldn’t do this without you!

See you on Saturday at the Strand Centre, the bargain hunting begins at 11am!

The Greatest Fair! (or so we like to think!)

In Dawlish this Saturday.....wait for it drum roll...... is Dawlish's very own Antiques and Vintage Fair, otherwise known as the finest antiques and vintage fair for miles around.  Old's Cool Trading are of course going to have their stall there and we can't wait to see you.

With the autumn months nearly upon us (boo! hiss! the summer went far too fast!) we've decided to start selling our vintage 1940s - 1960s knitting patterns,  We've got the knitting needles, bag and case too .  Perfect to while away those longer, darker nights.

Please pop along and say hello.  You'll never know what you'll find and you'll never leave empty handed or disappointed!

The Fifth Element

Old's Cool Trading had their fifth stall at the Dawlish Antiques and Vintage Fair last Saturday and  wow what a brilliant day we had, we were in our element.

Our sales included our very kitsch 1970s pineapple ice bucket (every home should have one!), one of our antique mini guides to ye olde inns and a totally retro Ghostbusters badge.  Once again, we aimed to please everyone!

We've already been busy acquiring new stock to sell for the next fair on 25 August so we're very excited.

See you there!

Thursday 19 July 2018

July, madly, deeply....

Seriously, where's the time going?  We've already done 4 antique and vintage fairs and our fifths one's this Saturday.  We've experienced all types of weather too, a deluge of snow at our first one in March to glorious sunshine for June's.

The one thing that's remained constant though is how much fun we've had selling our vintage loveliness at the fairs at the Strand Centre in Dawlish.  This time around we've got everything from vintage car adverts to glamtastic handbags to fascinating magazines from the 1940s.

You'll find something for everyone at the fair so why not shelter from the sunshine/rain/snow/plague of locusts (we're hedging our bets) on Saturday and come and say hello. We're looking forward to it!

Wednesday 20 June 2018

Come on England!

In preparation for our first game in the FIFA World Cup 2018 Old's Cool Trading went vintage footie crazy at Saturday's Dawlish Antiques and Vintage Fair.

Our favourite sales of the day were the 1950s Roy of the Rovers annual and our W Heath Robinson-esque goalie print.

The next fair's on 21 July 2018 so fingers crossed England will have won the World Cup by then.  It could happen!

Wednesday 13 June 2018

Miss it and you'll (free) kick yourself!

It's June's Dawlish Antiques and Vintage Fair this Saturday at the Strand Centre and to celebrate the other great events happening this month, i.e. Let's Rock Exeter on 30 June 2018 and - how could you miss it - the FIFA World Cup 2018, we're making sure we've got  80s and footie themed items for sale.

We'll have our well-loved 1950s Roy of the Rovers annual, Starsky and Hutch annual and original badges from the 80s including Star Wars, Ghostbusters II and even Diana and Charles' Wedding for sale.

The fair starts at 11am so please don't miss it!

Our Third Try!

The odds were stacked against Old's Cool Trading at last Saturday's Vintage and Antiques Fair.

Not only was it Harry and Meghan's wedding, the FA Cup Final, Exeter Chiefs' all-important try (geddit!) to get into the finals but the sunshine was glorious and there was a huge plant sale outside the Strand Centre which seemed to part lots of shoppers from their money.

Once everything got going, it took a bit longer this time though, it turned out to be a more  successful day than we originally thought it would be.  It was wonderful to see regulars coming back to our stall for more vintage treasure and we met some very friendly new faces.

The best sellers this time round were our vintage handbags and shoes, 1950s burlesque programmes from the Windmill Theatre in Soho (as seen in 'Miss Henderson Presents') and our vintage viewfinders and slides, our favourite being 101 Dalmatians.

We'll be doing it again next month so see you on 15th June.  We can't wait!

Thursday 17 May 2018

'Harry' up Saturday!

Dawlish's Antiques and Vintage Fair's back this Saturday and Old's Cool Trading are looking forward to it!

It's going to be a great day what with Harry and Meghan's wedding, the FA Cup Final and with our stall selling vinyl and ceramics for the first time.

Please come and say Hello, we'll be there from 11am onwards.

Soldiering on!

The week's flying by so quickly that we thought we'd better post about our stall at the second Dawlish Vintage and Antiques fair last Saturday, 21 April, before it's the weekend again.

This time around the weather was a beauty, glorious sunshine, and much more fun than the snow we encountered on our first venture into selling our treasure trove of vintage and antique goodies.

We learnt from the first antiques fair that a wide array of different items for sale is a good idea and this time we tried not to disappoint.  Our best sellers were our 1940s Soldier magazines, our bijoux antique rings and our vintage tins.  We were delighted that our Dawlish Georgian print was bought by one of Dawlish's residents too!

Once again we had a great time and it was lovely meeting new people and seeing familiar faces from our first time round.  One lady was kind enough to even bring us an antique razor set, men's scarf and some military buttons.

The next fair's on 19th May at the Strand Centre and we're ready thinking about what vintage loveliness to bring along.  We'll see you there so please come and say Hello!

Wednesday 11 April 2018

Second Nature

Old's Cool Trading had such a great time at the Dawlish Antiques Fair in March that we're doing it again on Saturday 21st April.

This time round we'll be selling a great variety of items including costume jewellery and brooches, Harris Tweed and kitchenalia.  As we like to say "variety is the spice of life".

See you at the Strand Centre on 21st April.  We'll be there from 11am onwards.

Dammit It Feels Good To Be A Chap - Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer

It might be a couple of years old now but Mr B's homage to the delights of being a chap, Olds Cool style, still tickles our fancy. Double G&Ts all round!

Monday 19 March 2018

Thank you Dawlish

Old's Cool Trading would like to say a very big thank you to the very kind people of Dawlish who fought through the snow to come to the first Dawlish Vintage and Antiques Fair at the Strand Centre on Saturday.

We would also like to congratulate Magpie Antiques for arranging the fairs and for making the first one such a success and to say thank you to the Strand Centre for holding the events.

We had a brilliant day selling everything vintage, meeting new people and seeing familiar faces.

One of our favourite moments was when we sold our Scottish teddy bear and the lovely big smile on our customer's face.

The next fair's at the Dawlish Strand Centre on April 21st. We'll see you there.

First Love

Old's Cool Trading are very excited about this weekend.

The first antiques and vintage fair is being held at the Strand Centre in Dawlish on Saturday and (drum roll......wait for it.....!) Old's Cool Trading are holding their first ever stall at the fair.

It's something we've always wanted to do and with so many old cool things for sale on our stall we would love for you to pop down and say hello.  You'll definitely pick up a vintage bargain!

We'll see you there!

Living in the 40s!

We wonder if this chap's still happily living in 1946? Unsurprisingly he's not on Facebook! Good man.
